Kiwi Pollen has developed a dry
pollen applicator consisting of a motorised air blower, a pollen
dispenser and a battery pack. The blower is driven by 2 stroke petrol
engine and delivers a constant stream of air from the delivery tube.
Pollen is introduced into the air stream from a small, battery-driven,
pollen dispenser. During flowering, the operator walks or drives
through the orchard with the delivery tube pointed into the canopy
Kiwi Pollen Blower Pollinating Instructions
| Application
Rate |
|
Pure pollen
(100%) |
500 grams per hectare in total,
to be applied in one or two passes at 90 - 100% flowering. |
Diluted pollen
(75:25 w/w) |
667 g of mix (75% pure pollen) per hectare in
total, to be applied in one or two passes at 90 - 100% flowering.
Note: the added diluent assists pollen dispersal. |
All pollen should be thawed for 1
hour before use at ambient temperature: 10 - 20 Celsius. Pollen kept
in the field should be stored in a chilly bin and never exposed to the
sun.
Dry pollen should be applied between
6 am and 11 am in dry orchard conditions, while the flower stigma is
sticky and receptive. Damp orchard conditions should be avoided.
Kiwi Pollen Blower Assembly
Instructions
Assembly of Dispenser Unit
Screw the reservoir bottle into the
dispenser, approximately one turn until a snug fit is obtained. Fit
tube to blower motor as per factory instructions.
A straight and a curved delivery tube
have been supplied. The short straight nozzle gives a wider spread of
pollen while the long curved nozzle gives a narrower distribution.
Operation of the Blower
Operate the blower at half speed for
pollinating. Follow the blower manufacturer instructions for starting
and general operation. After use, clean the dispenser by removing the
jar and with the electric motor running, clean out the residue pollen
with a vacuum cleaner or compressed air.
Start Up Procedure
Start up the blower and warm up the
motor. Put battery pack on shoulder and blower unit on opposite
shoulder. Next plug in the power plug to the socket at the back end of
dispenser, this can only fit one way.
Operation of the Pollen Dispenser
The pollen dispenser has a variable
speed controller with three marked settings (Lo -Medium - Hi):
Pure pollen should be applied at the
"Lo" to "Med" position.
50:50 pollen mix should be applied in
the "Medium" to "Hi" position.
Pollination
Walk at a steady speed through the
orchard. Aim the blower nozzle upward at the canopy 3 to 5 metres
ahead. Swing from side to side to cover the width of the row.
Exact calibration should be carried
out by the individual user to take into account variations in augur
speed, walking speed, and row width.
Battery Maintenance
The 12 volt battery supplied is of
ample capacity to give a full days operation. Recharge the battery
over night with the charger provided. Battery should be charged 3
times during the year when not in use.
