Pollen Collection
We have perfected the procedure for collecting male kiwifruit flowers and gently extracting their pollen. Freshly harvested pollen is dried to low moisture contents and then frozen for maximum storage life.

We only collect flowers from high performance male vines grown in well-maintained orchards with proper vine nutrition. Quality pollen grows fast and straight and has good seed setting performance.

Pollen purity is assured because our staff are skilled in collecting only flowers in the about-to-open stage, meaning little chance of cross contamination with wind and insect carried pollen.

Our quality assurance procedures during storage involve:

  • Regular testing of pollen samples and pollen tube growth in sugar solutions
  • Monitoring storage temperatures to maintain pollen at lower than -18C temperatures
  • Final testing for pollen germination before shipping
  • Shipping around New Zealand by fast courier using polystyrene chilly bins with glycol cold packs to maintain low temperatures
  • Shipping worldwide by "jet service" using polystyrene chilly bins with dry ice and glycol to maintain low temperatures

Pollen Storage for Orchard Use

On delivery of your pollen order, unpack the product:

  • Store at minus 18°C (-18°C), the temperature of a domestic freezer
  • Store in an air-tight food grade plastic container
  • Low humidity is preferable

At pollination time:

  • Thaw pollen slowly overnight in domestic refrigerator (4-6oC) for a maximum of 24 hours
  • Let temperature rise to 10°C and 20°C one hour before use
  • Do not thaw pollen in direct sunlight
